Let's get ready for your recording!

Here are a few key elements needed to make sure you have a successful recording that you're proud to share with your network.

Lighting

You don't need to purchase professional lighting for your recording, but with these easy tips you can make sure your face is well lit for a professional-looking recording.

  • Face toward a window or bright light source
  • When you are directly facing the light source (and not to the side of it or with it behind you) it will ensure your whole face is well lit and not just one side or all of your face being shadowed.
  • Have your computer between you and the light source.
  • The set up in the picture to the right is a perfect example!

Background and Clothing

You don't want to distract viewers from hearing what you're talking about with a messy background or cluttered clothing. Follow these tips for a professional-looking space for your recording.

  • Virtual or blurred backgrounds often glitch during recordings and are not recommended
  • Your head and shoulders should take up about 2/3rds of the video image (like the photo to the left)
  • Position yourself in front of a tidy bookshelf, solid wall, or clean/clutter free office
  • Do not position yourself with your back to a window or you will be back lit with a shadowed face

Noise & Video

Making sure your space you are recording in is quiet and your camera is set up properly is a key element for a great recording. Please ensure you abide by the following:

  • Place webcam at eye level if possible
  • A good and reliable webcam and mic setup are much preferable to a high-tech setup that requires frequent troubleshooting.
  • Have earbuds or headphones handy in case of echoes
  • No kids in your recording area
  • No pets in your recording area
  • Make sure there is no background noise (i.e. dishwasher, washing machine, people talking in the hallway, etc.)
  • Don't use a cell phone for your recording. Newer laptop built-in webcams and microphones are usually sufficient.
  • Place the microphone close to you for the best sound
